The writing from a Chinese newspaper is the source of inspiration for the 'China colors'. She portrays the mysterious and ignorant side of this culture for her, on paper. Van Riel incorporates newspaper clippings into her art. From 2025, she will write the Chinese characters on her paintings by herself and carefully choose their meaning. The sizes of these works on paper range from forty cm to around a meter high or wide.
